What is it?

Centre yourself around the Placa Major de Vic, and from here immerse yourself in the medieval town, witnessing everything from old castles, cathedrals and a picturesque river that was used as added protection during the dark ages.

Girona and Figueres

What is it?

Girona is one of the larger cities in Catalonia, yet still has a small town feel to it. It has a medieval centre and a very popular university.

Why see it?

Girona is one of the more picturesque city’s in Spain. It has an old, cobble street centre which is even where a lot of Game of Thrones was filmed. There is also a river with many bars and cafes next to for a quiet lunch.

Where is it?

Girona and Barcelona are very well linked. There is a high speed train that takes only 35 minutes, or a slower stopper service that takes just over an hour. By road it is an hour and 20 minutes.

Without doubt, the old city centre of Girona is one of the more picturesque city’s in Spain. It has an old, cobble street centre which is even where a lot of Game of Thrones was filmed! Many fans of the show embark on a journey there each year to see where the famous scenes were filmed. Once you have arrives at the train station, you will cross over the river and head towards the old town. This has churches, castles and even an old city wall you can walk the whole way around. By the river itself, there are many bars and cafes next to for a quiet lunch and sit back and relax in the Mediterranean sun.

Figueres is a beautiful old town that is home to Salvador Dali.

Why see it?

This is the place to go to see all things Dali. Here is his old house, along with the largest collection of Dali pieces on the planet.

Where is it?

Figueres is very near the French border. It is only an hour away from Barcelona on the high speed train, but is 1 hour 50 by road.

Continue on the train for a further half hour and you will arrive at Figueres. Figueres is a beautiful old town that is home to Salvador Dali. This is the place to go to see all things Dali, and for anyone wanting to find out more about this artistic genius. Figueres however, is further towards the French border, it is an extra half hour on the train and you can most definitely do both in one fantastic day of art and culture.

Besalu and Rupit

What is it?

Besalu is a small medieval town in the Catalan mountains, surrounded by an area of outstanding natural beauty including many waterfalls.

Why see it?

Besalu is absolutely stunning. It is a small town with its original wall still around it and even a moat. There is a great bridge to take photos from, and some boutique cafes inside.

Where is it?

Besalu is near Figueres before the French border. It is an hour and a half by road from Barcelona, and you need a private car or coach to get there.

Just to the south of Besalu lies Rupit. This is small Catalan village that will take you back in time to the Medieval period with its architecture. The town of Rupit is the stuff from your historic dreams. It is a small town with beautiful little cafes, hidden away in a forest with some wonderful hiking routes around.

SUMMARY

To see all the medieval towns of Catalonia would take years! None of us who work here have seen all of them yet, so we would never expect you to see them all! Your best bet is to hire a car and drive around a couple that interest you the most. Failing that, either get a train to Girona that leaves from Sants station or join one of the themed tours that comes with a guide for the day.
