Montserrat
What is it?
Montserrat is a mountain with a Benedictine Monastery an hour away from Barcelona. It is on top of a mountain that can look over the whole of Catalonia on a good day.
Why see it?
The Monastery itself is beautiful, and home to one of the Saints of Catalonia; the black Madonna. However, even more so it is also a place of extreme natural beauty. One you simply cannot miss. There are all kinds of hikes to viewing platforms and waterfalls to find in the magic mountains, as well as many camping spots.
Where is it?
Montserrat is an hour drive away from Barcelona, to the north just before you get to Manresa. It is also accessible by train, and takes around an hour and a half.
Just to the north of Barcelona, lies one of the most famous sights to see on this planet. Montserrat is a mountain with a Benedictine Monastery. The magic mountains serve great religious, historic and cultural importance and today acts as a symbol of Catalan nationalism. From the top of a mountain you can look over the whole of Catalonia on a good day; something the famous generals Hannibal and Napoleon in fact, both did.
The Monastery itself is beautiful, and home to one of the Saints of Catalonia; the black Madonna, one of the two patron saints of Catalonia. It is a unique sight in the catholic faith as the statue does not represent a saint, it itself is a saint, which you can even go and touch! If that was not special enough, it is also a place of extreme natural beauty. One you simply cannot miss.

The museum that is situated at the monastery is home to many pieces of local art work, many of which showing the mountain itself. Many famous artists have their art in there. Entry to the museum can be included in your ticket price as part of many of the tours

How far away is Montserrat from Barcelona?
This entirely depends on the time of year. Normally though it is an hour by road, or an hour and a half by train.
How much is the funicular from the Monastery level to the top of the mountain?
This is absolutely well worth doing as the views from the top are incredible! It costs €9.60 each way.

The bus up to Montserrat is very smooth up to the last 15 minutes. At this point it is a mountain road, but it is well paved. Those suffering from car sickness should be fine sat at the front of the bus.
