Sant Feliu de Guixols
What is it?
Sant Feliu is a typical Catalan town on the sea, perfect for those looking for an adventure.
Why see it?
Sant Feliu is a peaceful cove in itself, surrounded by many other small caves, coves and cliff edges. This makes it perfect for water sports, such as kayaking, and many day trips are available from Barcelona itself.
Where is it?
Sant Feliu is nearer than it looks to Barcelona due to its well connected toll road. A bus, private coach or car will only take 1 hour 20 minutes.
Sant Feliu is a traditional Catalan fishing town on the sea, and is perfect for those looking for an adventure or a more luxury holiday! Sant Feliu itself is the main port. From here there are a mix of the old fishing boats of the locals, and the new mini yachts of the rich Catalans. This blend of new and old, combined with it’s natural beauty make Sant Feliu one of the hotspots of the Costa Brava. With the port comes many little local restaurants, that do not just serve fantastic food, but are significantly cheaper than those in central Barcelona.
Historically the town of Sant Feliu de Guixols was a medieval market town. The town would sell the fish that the local fishermen caught, with the market being one of the many sights you can see in the town itself. The area as a whole also has a large religious significance. After the Moorish invasion of Spain, North Catalonia was one of the first places to go back to Christianity during the Reconquista. Therefore, in and around the town you will see many monasteries, most famously of course, that of the beautiful Montserrat. For anyone looking to explore the various mountains and hiking spots, including Montserrat, in the local area please do click here.
"Most popular for so many people is the kayaking and snorkling that can be done all around the local bays and coves,"
Throughout history, the town has also been a hub for various Catalan festivals, and generally is a now a symbol of Catalan nationalism. During carnival period, it has one of the best beach fiestas in the whole of the Costa Brava, and on August 1st it is famous for having a large fireworks display right on the beach front.
When it comes to history in the region, it is impossible not to mention the towns of Catalonia that make up the “Castle-Lands”. There are many different ones to see, all with their own unique flavour and touch. So for anyone wanting to explore these further, please click here.
Cross over the hill from Sant Feliu town centre, and you will reach the beach of Sant Pol. This is peaceful cove surrounded by some more up market hotels. These are some of the most luxurious in the Costa Brava, however be warned! Book as soon as you can, it is not in any way unheard of that these hotels will be sold out many months in advance, as people go back year after year.
The cove in itself is surrounded by many other small caves, bays and cliff edges. This makes it perfect for water sports, such as kayaking and snorkelling, and many day trips are available
from Barcelona itself. The town is not accessible by train, so you can either hire a car, or go on one of these many tours from the city, before staying over night should you wish.
BEACHES
Playa de Sant Pol
Welcome to one of the hubs of the Costa Brava. This pristine cove comes with all kinds of luxury hotels, and of course, many water sports in the summer months. Most popular for so many people is the kayaking and snorkling that can be done all around the local bays and coves, in the calm Mediterranean sea. Only an hour and twenty minutes from Barcelona, you can visit this beach easily in the day, and there are several options to do this on private coach by clicking here.
SUMMARY
Sant Feliu and the surrounded area is best explored with a car. If you can, definitely hire a car for a couple of days and explore the north region of Catalonia in its entirety. However, we appreciate lots of people wont have the time or money for that, so for day trips up the coast, here is our favourite tour.
