Sitges is the go to beach town to the south of Barcelona! With many bars, clubs and beach activities, there is lots to do at the beach level. Not only this, but in the swanky town itself there are many different shops, activities and even a Malibu rum museum!
Sitges has received a famous name in recent years for it’s liberal attitudes, party atmosphere and seductive style that makes it the perfect holiday location. Not only is it home to many of the rich and famous of Barcelona, for many years it has been one of the gay friendly capitals of Europe. This blend of money and style has given it a truly fashionable appearance, with many of the boutique shops and bars adding to this deeply chic town.
""The Saint-Tropez of Spain” has had many different vibes and names throughout time.."
“The Saint-Tropez of Spain” has had many different vibes and names throughout time. Through the Franco period it was seen as a “Mini Ibiza on the Mainland”, but has had an artistic past for a couple hundred years. For many years previous, Sitges’ main economic source came from two ideas that are still very much visible today. These are vineyards and wine making in the beautiful Penedes region, and fishing from the old port town. There are many vineyards in the area, our favourites of which are available HERE, and the old port is still visible in the town from the Castle that used to protect it. The new port is one of the most popular sites to go to for anyone looking to have a fish dinner or traditional Paella.
For those looking to delve deeper into the history of Sitges, there are a couple of small museums surrounding the castle and church of Sant Bartholomew. The Maricel and Cau Ferrat museums, do not just go deeper into the history of the town, but also show some beautiful art work and sculptures whilst looking over the glistening turquoise Mediterranean sea.
The other popular attraction of Sitges is its incredible party atmosphere! The town itself has many bars and clubs, accumulating in two huge fiestas each year. These are carnival and the day of the pride parade. On both days the city is nothing other than one huge party that goes on all night long. It is one of the largest carnivals in the whole of Europe and you will undoubtedly meet many cool and interesting locals who will show you how to party Sitges style!
However, for the majority, Sitges is all about its wine growing and picturesque beach life.
